Seniors Real Estate Advisors(SM)
What does your future look like? Every reason for buying or selling real estate is as unique as each person behind the decisions. Your reason(s) are probably different at 30, 50 or 75. Nonetheless, the goal is the same – your purchase or sale of a home. Regardless of your age, buying, selling or investing in real estate affects your taxes, assets, liabilities and estates. Yet an interesting thing happens as we mature in age, we begin to pay more attention to these matters. Or, we should.
Many of us don't want to face the reality that someday we might need more than our current income or even worse, outlive our assets. The equity in your property may be the most valuable financial asset you possess. Decisions you make today regarding homeownership can impact your future options and quality of life.
Whether your estate is worth $100,000, $1,000,000 or more, you should have a good plan in place to protect your equities as much as possible for your future security. And your family's. You've worked hard all your life to build an estate. Regrettably, when you decide to make a move it's no longer as simple as 'I'll cash out, take all the profits, travel the world...' or 'Just give the house to the kids.'
Protect your right to decide. Tax laws and property laws are increasingly complex and have a huge impact on how far and how long you can 'travel the world', your's or your partner's housing options if either should need assisted living arrangements, or which child, step-child, spouse or ex-spouse is entitled by law to receive profits from the sale of your home. At the very least, be sure you have a Simple Will, regardless of your age. For the 70% of Americans who don't, you'll have a No-Will Will; amusing but sadly, true.
